In addition to her artistic work, Äkkijyrkkä has kept eastern Finnish cattle, known as kyytöt, and has been an advocate for Finnish native cattle breeds.
Kyytöt and Miina Äkkijyrkkä
In addition to her artistic work, Äkkijyrkkä has had Eastern Finnish cattle, known as Kyyttö, and has advocated for Finnish native cattle. Äkkijyrkkä attended Ypäjä Equine College from 1965 to 1966 and North Savo Livestock School. She acquired her first cow in 1974, which played a leading role in Matti Kassila’s film Natalia.
She bought a Kyyttö from Pentti Sappinen of Kangasniemi in 1976. Onni-Manni bull is the son of this cow named Kyyttö and for seven years, it was part of Ähtärinreitti Loma Oy’s “Little Finland” animal gallery. From there, semen samples were supplied for artificial insemination. In the same year, a Kyyttö herd from Kiuruvetelä Heinäkylä farmer Onni Borg, long foundation base Löytö, Leena and Sointuisa, which have a lot of offspring.
Conservation work got additional momentum when, in March 1977, European Gene Bank Working Group Chairman Professor Kalle Maijala published an article in the Cattle Newspaper about the endangered status of native cattle.
1977 Daughter Auri Lauha Wilhelmiina Halonen was born.
In 1982, Äkkijyrkkä purchased Rutakolla’s Punahilkka and Lumikki from Taavetti Rönkkö’s farm, which made a round trip through Reja Östman’s farm to Pelso Prison Genetic Cattle. The acquisition took place when Äkkijyrkkä drove past the farm and saw white black-eared heifers on the roadside pasture. She drove into the yard to inquire about them, and upon learning they were destined for slaughter, she said “hold on” and drove to the nearest bank, emptying her account to the last penny, and returned to the farm. There wasn’t enough for three, but she took two in a van.
From 1983 to 1990, Miina Äkkijyrkkä served as an expert in the Gene Bank Working Group established by the Ministry of Agriculture. It can also be attributed to her that the workhorse stud trial was not removed from the studbook registration.
In 1983, Äkkijyrkkä’s herd included the Lappish bull Äkkijyrkkä’s Kuninkaan Poeka, which she acquired from breeder Marja-Liisa Rantamölö, from Arpela village in Tornio. By then, she had already become acquainted with Leino Lehto, who deserved a medal for his protection work with Lapland cattle in the early stages, after veterinarian Jussi Kemppainen brought her Pulmu and Kaunikki, named Lapland cattle. With determination, Kerttu and Leino Lehto also received the first Lapland bull semen samples in Finland, including Figer, Fager, and Kare (who is Ä. Kuninkaan Poeka’s father).
Äkkijyrkkä also trained the Kuninkaan Poeka bull for traffic-safe draught work, and semen was also taken from it at the Pieksämäki bull station. The retrieval trip was interesting as the new owner of the bull was eight months pregnant, but they reached Pöljä, where Miina’s herd was then in evacuation. Driving training also began immediately.
From the Philippines, Äkkijyrkkä ordered her herd to be reduced, and it was slaughtered, leaving six animals. However, in the autumn, double the amount was bought in its place, so in the autumn, the herd included:
NATALIA b. -73, Ryttylä, Erkki Tähtivirta, purchased 21.1.73, Western Finnish cattle

Officials assisted the millionaire lady. The animals had only disappeared from Äkkijyrkkä’s registry in 2002. The greatest loss was the NÄTTI cow, which Kauko Vilenius DONATED to Äkkijyrkkä for significant conservation work.
1995 – 2010 Another and, from a conservation perspective, the most significant farm for Äkkijyrkkä was Skatan Tila in Vuosaari, Helsinki, where at its peak there were 105 cattle, 5 Finnish horses, 200 poultry, 9 dogs, and 35 cats (Äkkijyrkkä’s bred Skata-Tabby), which were shot when the eviction became effective. The breed was developed from Siamese, Gorat, Abyssinian, Norwegian Forest Cat, and European. 20 years of breeding work went to waste. However, the most beautiful individuals were shamelessly stolen and some ended up under cars. The city of Helsinki terminated the lease agreement with Äkkijyrkkä, and the Helsinki District Court decided on 6 November 2008 that the city had justified reasons to terminate the lease agreements for the farm and land areas. Äkkijyrkkä was ordered to leave the farm by the end of 2008. [Link][Link] The Court of Appeal upheld the District Court’s decision. [Link] Some of the cattle that lived on the farm were slaughtered at the end of 2009, and their meat has been advertised specifically as Äkkijyrkkä’s beef. [Link]
The reasons for ending the farm’s management rights were manifold, but Miina Äkkijyrkkä’s work in shaping the Uutela landscape into a traditional landscape of ancient times is undeniable and has left a unique memory in the minds of many families’ children. Despite the movement of various people through the farm and the large number of animals and car traffic, accidents were avoided.
Vandalism was a significant nuisance, totaling approximately €250,000, to which the landlord ???, more than outsiders did not offer their help. The economic value of repairs made on the farm has been approximately €2.0 million. 15 years of work and the moving costs are still €60,000, and the value of animals stolen from the yard is approximately €50,000.
The Skata environment was significant, inspiring, and ideal for livestock farming from the perspective of a creative sculptor, despite whatever opinions may exist. Between 1999 and 2010, approximately 25 large car sculptures, difficult to implement indoors, were created for the production of tin cattle sculptures, which have not been seen since – nor before. Time will tell whether the sculptor’s creative work has been completely halted.
